Microneedling Facials

Microneedling 1.jpg

A professional CE approved pen device with anti-back flow, containing a sterile disposable cartridge with tiny needles is used in order to leave minute puncture wounds in the skin. But don't be put off, the treatment is used without a numbing cream as it is a treatment based on your comfort levels.  These tiny punctures trigger the body’s wound healing response and encourage the body to renew the skin cells in that area. While the body repairs the skin, it increases the production of collagen and elastin, immediately plumping the area, and causing a diminishment to wrinkles. As the body repairs the skin you will also see scarring, dark marks and sun damage decreasing.  Although improvement should be seen after one session, a course of treatment is advised dependent on your skin concerns.

The skin is double cleansed then using sterile water the pen device is used on the area to be treated.  Red light LED is then used to help to reduce erythema and inflammation.  A sterile Hyaluronic Acid vial is then massaged over the skin to stimulate cell renewal, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve hydration and volume, and has an anti-inflammatory effect.  Or a Growth Factor Serum can be used which includes peptides to improve circulation and strengthen capillaries.  Treatment will finish with the use of a hydrating repairing moisturiser.

After the procedure, erythema (redness) will be present, it should begin to calm within 20 minutes of treatment for most skin types, within 24-48 hours redness should dissipate. When you leave the salon your face may feel warm and tight for up to 3 days. From day 4 natural growth factors are released to stimulate reformation and deposition of fresh, restricting Collagen. You will see your true results from 21 days and they can last up to 2 years, however results are individual and dependent on age, health, lifestyle choices, skin type & concerns. You will be given strict aftercare when you leave.

Benefits of Microneedling

Some benefits of the procedure include:

  • Reduced risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring

  • Suitable for sensitive skin

  • Cost-effective and can be done on areas of the skin not suitable for peeling or laser resurfacing

  • The epidermis remains intact and undamaged, as opposed to ablative laser resurfacing

  • Regular activities can be resumed within a few days

  • Safe and relatively simple procedure that can be performed in salon

  • Treatment does not result in a line of demarcation between treated and untreated skin, as usually occurs with other resurfacing procedures

Am I a Candidate for Microneedling?

Since microneedling is minimally invasive and uses needles instead of heat, it’s safe for all skin types and tones. The following conditions are contraindicated to treatment if you:

  • Are younger than 18 years of age

  • Have skin infections

  • Have facial oedema

  • Are taking steroids

  • Have hypersensitive skin due to conditions such as lupus

  • Suffer from certain skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, keratosis polaris or psoriasis to localised area

  • Are pregnant or nursing

  • Have active cold sores or active acne to localised area

  • Have localised skin infections (bacterial, fungal or viral)

  • Use Roaccutane (need to be 6-12 months clear)

  • Have localised moles

  • Are undergoing skin cancer treatment localised to area (need to be 24 months clear), other cancers 12 months clear

  • Have a very low pain threshold

  • Are taking blood thinners eg Wolfarin/have blood clotting disorders

  • Type 1 diabetic

  • Have undergone recent laser treatment

Clients with red veins, allergies and long term steroid use should be treated with caution.  During consultation I will assess your skin, medical history and aesthetic needs to determine whether or not microneedling is a safe and effective procedure for you.

Pre Treatment Advice

Please avoid the following prior to treatment:

  • Avoid Accutane in the six months prior to beginning your treatment sessions

  • Dermal filler - these clients should wait 3 weeks post filler

  • Botox - these clients should wait 2 weeks post botox treatment

  • Avoid IPL/Laser procedures, unprotected sun exposure, or sunburn for at least 2 weeks prior to your procedure.

  • Steroids - if on a low dose, stop taking 1 week before

  • Avoid blood thinning agents for one week prior because bruising can be a side effect of microneedling.

  • No waxing, depilatory creams, or electrolysis to the area being treated for 5-7 days prior.

  • Do not use topical agents that may increase the sensitivity of your skin such as retinoids, exfoliants, topical antibiotics or acids 5-7 days prior to your treatment.

  • Do not take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil for at least 3 days prior to your microneedling session. These will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical for your skin rejuvenation.

  • If you’re prone to cold sores, take an anti-viral agent for 2 days prior to, and the day of, the treatment.

  • Swimming 24 hours before treatment

  • Do not shave the day of the procedure to avoid skin irritation. If there’s dense hair present in the treatment area, shave the day before you arrive for your appointment.

If type 2 diabetic, treatment can only go to a depth of 1mm, which is still a good treatment depth for the face.

Please inform your skin care therapist about any relevant changes in your medical history or medication prior to your appointment.

Post Treatment Advice

During the skin healing process, minor itching, flaking or redness may appear. If symptoms persist, please call me for advice or see your GP.

Please follow this advice after the procedure:

  • Do not use ice on your face, and avoid using arnica/bromelain. These may interfere with the natural inflammatory process that’s critical for your skin rejuvenation.

  • Avoid sun tanning and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks. After 24 hours, always use sunblock (SPF30 or higher) and wear a hat if you’re outside.

  • Use only mineral makeup after 24 hours.

  • Sleep on your back with the head of the bed elevated to minimise any swelling that may occur.

  • Avoid strenuous exercises that cause sweating as well as jacuzzis, saunas, steam baths, hot showers for up to 48 hours.

  • You can take a painkiller, such as Tylenol, if you experience any soreness.

  • Do not cleanse skin until next day

  • Avoid spray or self-tan for 2 days

  • Avoid electrolysis, waxing, bleaching (face) for 36 hours

  • Avoid retinoids for 3 days after treatment

  • Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications for one week after the procedure.

  • Do not swim in chlorinated water or the sea for the next week

  • Take directed advice if undergoing laser or IPL treatment

  • Avoid further clinical treatments including microdermabrasion, laser, chemical peels, dermal fillers for 2 weeks

  • Avoid tattooing (inc. cosmetic tattooing) for 2 weeks

Light oil free make-up may be applied 24 hours post-procedure. If you are in any doubt about any of the above activities, please call for clarification to when normal activity may be resumed.

The Healing Process: What to Expect After a Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling is a quick and non-invasive cosmetic procedure with minimal side effects. However, it’s quite normal to experience the following:

Day 1-3

A sunburn-like effect is normal. Your skin may feel tight, dry or sensitive to touch. Treat the skin gently by washing it with a gentle cleanser, cool water, and using only your hands to pat dry no earlier than 4 hours after treatment.

Some redness may also be present and in some cases, clients may experience slight bruising that can last for 5-7 days and temporary swelling for 2-4 days.

Day 2-7

Peeling may start 3-5 days after the treatment. You’ll notice skin dryness and flaking which is due to an increased turnover of skin cells. DO NOT pick, scratch, or scrub at treated skin!

Important information: You must allow the old skin to flake off naturally and keep it moisturised at all times. Talk to your skin therapist about which products to use.

Day 5-7

You may start your regular skin care products again, once your skin no longer feels irritated. Most clients should notice continued skin improvement over the months following their last treatment.

For best results: I recommend microneedling treatments every 4-6 weeks, with a series of 3-5 treatments depending on your personalised care plan.
